The first player to win three games would win the game and receive a reward of a chest of coins. It was originally known as giochi di macchina (machine games), or gioco dell'Agnelli in Italian. 'Agnelli,' which is an Italian surname, is also the name of Giovanni Agnelli's family business empire.

Later versions of Uno were based on Italian and Spanish decks. Some notable variations include excluding certain cards from play and including more than 52 cards in a deck. Some decks have both Italian and Roman numerals on the cards to comply with international standards for number representation. In addition, some decks have symbols such as hearts, diamonds, clubs and owls on the back of each card to add variety to gameplay. Players compete in Uno by putting down cards or forming words. The winner is determined when all players have completed their turn drawing and playing cards onto the table.

There are several variations of how players should play Uno depending on where it originated. In Italy, players form words by adding an 'a' at the end of each card they play. For example, if a player had an 'una' card left in his hand, he would play an 'una' at the end of his turn. Other common word formations in Italy include using numbers between one and six as well as forming short phrases with these numbers such as 'one two three.' The winning formation in Italy has six cards in it with one card being an 'a.' To form an 'a,' players can either use their hands or a plastic spoon to make a letter A shape on their table.

In Spain, players also use their hands to form letters but omit the word 'a' at the end of each word they form. Instead, they use numbers between one and six as well as forming phrases using these numbers such as 'one two three four five six.' There are also many variations on how to hold your hand when forming words with numbers- some hold their hand flat while others hold their hand cocked back slightly. Players also form expressions using numbers such as 'I feel angry.'

Although there are several methods for forming words or adding numbers to win games of Uno, most countries prefer their own style of gameplay depending on where the game originated. Most uno players agree that it's best to include an 'a' at the end of each word you form when playing in Italy, or omit it when playing in Spain.
