The storyline for Spyro: Year of the Dragon revolves around threats to dragon city-state. Former dragon Spyro had saved his home in the first two games, but a time has come for him to save his home again. Over the course of 10 levels, he'll team up with other dragons to save his home. Along his journey, he'll encounter enemies such as Cynder's dragons, archers and minions; Sir Kricville's soldiers and war elephants; and Grendor's witches and ogres. The final levels pit Spyro against Cynder herself, where he must defeat her and stop her plans to destroy dragon city-state.

The setting for Spyro: Year of the Dragon is different from the previous installments in the series. Instead of taking place in a Scottish castle like in the first game, this one takes place in a Greek-style world populated by dragons and centaures (half-human half-horse creatures). In addition to saving his home from destruction, Spyro must also fight against evil dragons who have enslaved centaur citizens. Throughout this world, players can access green speckled marble landscapes, gothic architecture, villages inhabited by centaurs and dragons alike and a harbor full of ships.

Spyro: Year of the Dragon introduces several new gameplay elements that set it apart from its predecessors. One new feature is Spyro's ability to fly with his wings at any time during gameplay. Players can also customize their character's appearance via an in-game shop. They can also participate in cooperative multiplayer matches where they must work together with a friend to save dragon city-state.
