The series is built upon the concept of virtuality and the player can choose to act out any fantasy they have. The game's violence is shocking to many people, but each installment in the series becomes more graphic and realistic. Each title in the series has received universal acclaim and is considered a benchmark for gaming.

Many believe that the series glorifies crime and violence. The games' protagonists are criminal masterminds who live by their own rules- and that includes murder, robbery, torture, sexual deviance and more. The games are also filled with bizarre characters doing bizarre things. Stunning stunts and gory murder scenes abound in each title. These elements make the games seem to condone criminal lifestyles. Despite this, fans praise the games for their depth, narrative and freedom of gameplay.

Though not all gamers interpret GTA as an endorsement of criminal behavior, it still bears universal acclaim thanks to its popularity among fans of illegal activities. Certain characters modded the game to run on iOS devices allowing players to play on planes without causing interference with equipment. Certain fan clubs have also sprung up around certain characters within the game; each club idolizes a different protagonist within the series. For instance, there is an avid club following for Niko Bellic (a character within GTA IV) who idolizes John Lennon and bears his name.

The series has also received numerous versions, which allow for players to experience gameplay in different ways each time they play it. For instance, there is an episodic version where players follow one character from start to finish- there's also an open-world version where players can roam freely throughout all areas of the game's environment- and there's also a minivan version where players can travel between predetermined locations while collecting items or completing missions along the way.
